I served as an assistant state's attorney for six years fighting, to put felons behind bars. I have a deep respect for the legal process and the right to a fair trial laid out in our Constitution. I wish the jury had issued a stronger verdict and reached a consensus on the more serious charges. I hope the federal government will move swiftly in a retrial to ensure justice is served in Illinois. We cannot let corruption go unpunished. I am very disappointed today and I hope the former governor gets the strong sentence he deserves in a retrial. I am committed to restoring accountability to Springfield and I will take strong steps to prevent this from happening again. |
